PARMA, Ohio - One of Northeast Ohio’s largest school districts is closing schools.
The Parma School Board voted 3-2 Monday night to close four elementary schools as part of a consolidation plan. The four schools closing are Hanna, John Glenn, State Road and Pearl Road elementary schools.
The school closings are all part of a major consolidation plan that will help the school district save money. The closings will start during the 2012-2013 school year and are expected to save the district almost $2 million a year.
Parma School Board President Leo Palaibis voted against the closing. He told The Plain Dealer he was voting "no" because he disagreed with the consolidation plan approved by the board on Oct. 24.
The new plan will also add students to Parma high schools and middle schools. Parma high schools will add grade eight and the middle schools will now include grades five to seven.
