PARMA, Ohio - Veterinarians now know what’s wrong with American bulldog/boxer mix that was found in Parma on Monday.

The dog was brought to Parma Animal Control officers by a resident, who discovered him on Fruitland Drive. He was only 67 pounds at the time, when he should weigh about 100.

The dog, now named Max, also has a mass on his jaw that vets have determined is an infection from starvation and abuse. He was also kept in a cage, and is mostly skin and bones. Vets said he would have probably died in the next few days if he didn’t receive proper care.

Animal control officer Julie Kocik said the dog is a friendly, sweet boy, who even let clinic employees clip his nails. Despite his high fever, he’s still wagging his tail.

The pup will continue to receive treatment and, if all goes well, he could be up for adoption in a couple of months. Donations to help pay for his care can be made to the Parma Animal Shelter , which is a non-profit organization.

You can follow updates on the dog's condition on the Parma Animal Control Facebook page .
