CLEVELAND - President Barack Obama unveiled the most sweeping proposals for curbing gun violence in two decades on Wednesday, one month after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Obama is pressing Congress to pass universal background checks, bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
"My favorite one that he is doing is closing the gun show loophole," said Mike Dawson who owns Fivestar Firearms. The gun shop owner agrees with most of what the president unveiled except for one thing.
"The only thing I disagree with is the assault weapons ban."
Christopher Banks is an associate professor at Kent State University, an attorney and author. "I think the dialogue has changed. I think Newtown is a game changer," he said.
Banks spent time in Connecticut. "I drove through Newtown, I know people who know the victims there. It is very personal to me."
It's personal to many Americans too. Recent polls show most Americans support some kind of gun control measure and that might just make a difference with the gun control debate this time.
"I think he's taking a comprehensive approach for sure," said Banks. "He is trying to change the dialogue because it has been squarely in the favor of the NRA."
