SOLON, Ohio - Tuesday morning was a special time in Solon as the Military Order of the Purple Heart named the city the county's first "Purple Heart City."
Solon Mayor Susan Drucker then presented a proclamation to the veterans group naming July 24, 2012 as Purple Heart Day in the city at a Veterans Memorial Park ceremony.
The Purple Heart is a military medal that goes back to George Washington and is bestowed upon those who were injured or killed in battle.
"When you see a person with a Purple Heart, you are seeing a person who sacrificed blood for their country," said Paul Suscinski, Commander of Purple Heart Veterans Chapter 699.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall is also making a stop in Solon. The wall, a replica of the original, will be on display from July 26-July 30 at the Solon VFW Post 1863, 6340 Melbury Ave. It features more than 58,000 names of those killed in Vietnam.
