LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Fourteen Lakewood pizza shops were looking to raise money, fill tummies and win hearts in the Kiwanis 2012 Bake-off at the Lakewood High School auditorium Friday night.
Angelo's won Best Pepperoni, Dewey's won Best Specialty and Zappitelli's on Madison won the People's Choice Award.
The Kiwanis were the real winners as they looked to raise between $5,000- $10,000 in their first ever pizza fundraising event.
Ten dollars bought you all the pizza you could eat.
Nick Kovach is a self-proclaimed pizza lover. He bounced from table to table filling his plate and he looked for the basics in a pizza.
"A lot of cheese, and good bread, good crust," Nick said.
Michelle Reiner of Beachwood didn't like one pizza because it was too doughy, but she loved the thicker pepperoni slices of Zappitelli's and the crust as well.
"It was crispy on the outside and crunchy, I like that she said," she said.
Adam Carroll, the creator of that pizza, knows it takes more than standard ingredients.
"In any food, it's all about how much heart you put in," Adam said. "Because we love what we do, our product is the best."
Winning awards is what Angelo's does over and over. Even though they went through 500 slices quickly and had to wait for more to be delivered, Jonathon Rose was confident.
"Everybody here is great, I mean everybody here does what they do and do it great that's why they're invited," he said. "But as far as pizza goes hands down I think we got it."
Money raised by the Kiwanis will be distributed to children and family charities in Lakewood.
