CLEVELAND - A hearing was scheduled to continue Wednesday for a condemned Ohio inmate believed by his attorneys to be too mentally ill to be executed.

Abdul Awkal received a last-minute reprieve from Gov. John Kasich last week just hours before he was set to die for killing his estranged wife and brother-in-law in a Cleveland courthouse in 1992.

Kasich granted the reprieve to allow Cuyahoga County Judge Stuart Friedman time to hold a hearing on Awkal's mental competency.

Awkal's attorneys argue he is so mentally ill he believes the CIA is orchestrating his execution.

Defense experts testified Tuesday that they believe Awkal is too incompetent to be put to death.

The state opposes any delay, saying several courts have upheld Awkal's competency.
