BAY VILLAGE, Ohio - Heather Rhoads wasn't home when a 90 foot white oak tree came crashing down in gusty winds over the weekend, but when she arrived home on Midland in Bay Village she took a huge sigh of relief.
That's because the backyard tree missed crushing her house by only a few feet.
Power of 5 meteorologist Jason Nicholas says the peak wind gust in Cleveland was 41 mph at Hopkins Airport Saturday and the wind was gusting to 39 mph at Burke around 6 Saturday night when the tree came crashing down .
Part of the tree hit the back porch, but other trees surrounding the oak played an instrumental role in holding the tree off the home.
Rhoads said she was glad the tree didn't damage or destroy her house and she was also relieved it narrowly missed the neighbor's house and garage.
Jeff Spinelli from JLS Services and his crew spent much of Sunday using a crane and chainsaws to cut and remove the large oak.
Spinelli said the tree actually came to rest on part of the house and back porch, but because the tree was snagged in other nearby trees its weight was not bearing down on the home.
No one was injured.
