EUCLID, Ohio - If you’re looking for a fun winter activity for the family this weekend, but are tired of braving the outdoor cold and snow, Euclid is the place to be.

The Euclid Blade and Edge Figure Skating Club and the city of Euclid are hosting an entire weekend of events at the city’s C.E. Orr Arena – for those who would like to watch some figure skating and for those who wish to try it out for themselves.

On Saturday the figure skating club will host the Euclid Celebrate Skating Competition—an annual event featuring more than 100 basic skill level figure skating competitors from rinks across Northeast Ohio.

The competition is one of five basic skills competitions held as part of the Greater Cleveland Basic Skills series throughout the year.  The Euclid Celebrate Skating competition was one of the first area events of its kind when it was founded more than 20 years ago.

Events on Saturday begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the rink will host a qualifying competition for the Special Olympics featuring 24 area skaters.  Skaters competing in this event are vying for a chance to compete in the Special Olympic State Winter Games to be held Feb. 6– 7 at the Cuyahoga National Park, Brandywine Ski Resort, and Kent State University. Special Olympics events on Sunday will run from 9:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Also on Sunday, the rink will host a “Great to Skate” clinic in conjunction with U.S. Figure Skating National Skating Month.  The free clinic will run form 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and will feature free lessons every 20 minutes, couple skates, figure skating and hockey demonstrations and door prizes from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lake Erie Monsters and the IX Indoor Amusement Park.

The C.E. Orr Arena is located at 22550 Milton Drive in Euclid (off of Babbitt Road). For more information call 216-289-8649.
