MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio - If Miley Cyrus wanted to get people talking, she did.
No longer Disney's Hannah Montana who young girls idolized, Cyrus shocked the MTV Video Music Awards audience with a provocative on-stage performance that left the mother of one 10-year-old girl speechless.
"I didn't know what to say," Jessica Meany said.
Meany watched the show with her daughter, Olivia, not realizing what kind of performance they'd see. She said it was uncomfortable for both of them.
"I think we were both in shock," she said.
Another parent said she didn't see the performance until Monday morning while she was on her computer. Her 12-year-old daughter didn't see it at all.
"I want her to know it's not appropriate behavior," Lisa Agresta said. "You don't have to prove that you're old by showing more of your skin and acting a certain way. It's ridiculous."
Clinical psychologist Ellen Casper, PhD recommends parents explain to children that the performance was both over the top and inappropriate, that Miley Cyrus made a bad choice about her material, but that it doesn't mean she's a bad person.
Meany planned to talk to her daughter about it Monday night.
"I'll try to explain to her that that's not a way that we act and I hope that you don't think that's neat or cool or anything like that," she said.
