Feds, Ohio hospital settle HIV discrimination case

ROCK CREEK, Ohio - A northeast Ohio hospital accused of discrimination by refusing to allow someone with HIV into an alcohol treatment program will pay more than $32,000 in a settlement.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Cleveland says Glenbeigh Hospital in Rock Creek violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by refusing someone admission because of side effects from his medication for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The office says investigators found the specialty hospital couldn't prove treating the patient would have directly threatened others' health or safety.
The settlement requires Glenbeigh to pay about $32,000 to the complainant and $5,000 in civil penalties. It also must create an anti-discrimination policy and train employees about the ADA.
A message was left for the head of the not-for-profit facility, about 45 miles east of Cleveland.
