ASHLAND, Ohio - Police are looking into the possibility that murder suspect Nate Summerfield of Ashland had an accomplice.

Peter Elliot with the U.S. Marshal's Office said investigators are following up on tips and leads about a possible second person being involved in some way.

Summerfield, 27, was captured Aug. 15 at the Legacy Inn and Suites in Wadsworth after being on the run for more than a month. He's been charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend Lynn Jackenheimer, whose body was found in North Carolina after she was reported missing.

Summerfield, Jackenheimer, their 3-year-old son and Jackenheimer's 13-year-old daughter all took a trip to the Outer Banks for the Fourth of July. On July 8, Summerfield dropped the children off with a family member and disappeared. His brother called 911, saying his brother told him he killed Jackenheimer.

On the day of his capture, NewsChannel5 Chief Investigator Ron Regan spoke to Marilyn Vickers, a member of the cleaning crew at the hotel who witnessed the arrest. She said she saw a man with a dog come out of room 211 – the same room where Summerfield was staying – and drive away in a red pickup truck. Moments later, law enforcement officials moved in on the room and arrested Summerfield.

The cleaning crew was taken into another room for safety, where they heard authorities yelling "get down, get down."

Summerfield checked in by himself the day before under the name "Jay Summerfield" of Polk, Ohio – a town north of Ashland. A check by Regan found that name corresponds with a relative of Nate Summerfield who lives in Polk and has a criminal record.

There's no confirmation about who that man may have been leaving Summerfield's room. Investigators would not comment when asked about that witness account.

Summerfield waived extradition in Medina County and was transported back to Dare County, North Carolina.
