A teacher at Normandy High School was one of  54 select educators to be recognized nationwide with a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.

Normandy teacher Jennifer McCalla was presented with the award and check at a dinner and ceremony  on Saturday at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica, Calif.

The awards are given out by the Milken Educator Forum, which specializes in finding new and inventive ways to impact the nation's education system.

The Milken Educator Awards were first presented in 1987. Since then, more than 2,400 educators have received $60 million in cash awards.
