More known about shooting suspect

ELYRIA, Ohio - The suspect who police said shot and killed Elyria Patrol James Kerstetter did not have a lengthy record.

It was almost exactly one year ago that Elyria police arrested 58-year-old Ronald Palmer.

Palmer was initially charged with domestic violence, aggravated menacing and unlawful restraint in an incident involving his wife, Garnetta Palmer. That happened at the couple’s 18th Street home, where Monday night’s shooting took place.

Police said Palmer held his wife against her will and threatened to kill himself.

As a condition of bond, he was ordered to stay away from his wife, get a psychological evaluation and not to have any guns. He later pleaded no contest to a lesser charge in September and was handed a 30-day suspended sentence.

Palmer was shot by responding officers and was pronounced dead at the scene.
