Trial begins for accused fake Akron veterinarian Brandi Tomko; faces charges of drugs, injuring pets

AKRON, Ohio - The trial for a Wadsworth woman accused of killing pets while posing as a veterinarian begins Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.

Brandi Tomko, 36, faces a 14-count indictment, including felony drug charges. She also faces several misdemeanor charges for injuring animals and prohibitions concerning companion animals.

Prosecutors said Tomko pretended to be a veterinarian at C&D Animal Hospital in Akron, Ohio. They said she drew blood, wrote prescriptions and performed surgeries on animals, including spaying cats and neutering at least one dog.

Pet owners told Akron police their pets became more ill, were injured or died after being treated by Tomko.

Prosecutors said pet owners will testify about their experiences during the trial Tuesday.

The expected witnesses include Kenny Reymann. He brought Tomko's story to NewsChannel5's attention last March after his dog, Charlie, died after Tomko treated him.

Reymann said he is looking forward to facing Tomko in court.

Judge Paul Gallagher will preside over the trial, which is expected to last two days.
