CLEVELAND - An exclusive 5 On Your Side investigation reveals the tipster in the search for Amanda Berry has been diagnosed with a "psychiatric disorder" and has a history of trying to win release from prison.
Robert Wolford, 25, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for a 2007 murder. Court records reveal that he has been trying to get out of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility since shortly after being convicted in 2008.
His handwritten appeals even won a new trial, but Wolford later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. And as recently as last December, he requested his "psychiatric" examination that was ordered by the court.
Court records show he has an undiagnosed "psychiatric disorder" and in a handwritten letter, admits to an IQ as low as 55. Wolford argues that his IQ should have prevented him from entering a plea and blames his attorney.
Juvenile court records also reveal a troubled past as early as age 12, including a long history burglary, theft, breaking and entering and receiving stolen property.
A family member who asked not to be identified said Wolford used crack cocaine as young as 9 years old, was molested as a child and became a male prostitute in the west side Cleveland neighborhood where he grew up.
Even so, police said they believe he has offered credible evidence in the disappearance of Amanda Berry in 2003, including reportedly being involved.
