CLEVELAND - An exclusive 5 On Your Side investigation into a leaking nuclear power plant has found new evidence of radiation leaks and prompted a review of classified documents that may provide a link to suspected cancers.
( See the original investigation by Ron Regan )
The investigation raised serious questions involving a "portable" nuclear plant at McMurdo Station in Antarctica where Navy personnel served during the 1960s and 70s. The plant was shut down in 1972 and dismantled.
But our investigation reviewed the Navy's final operating report that revealed a history of malfunctions -- 438 over the plant's operating period from 1964 to 1972.
Veterans who served there have long suspected their cancers were related to possible radiation exposure, although the final report concluded that levels were not excessive.
Our investigation uncovered a government report that found 30 cracks in the reactor core, a fuel leak of undetermined origin and increasing radiation levels in the primary coolant.
Classfied documents are now being reviewed to determine if the leaks could have led to radiation poisoning and cancer deaths. The documents have not been released by the government.
But another government report that we found shows widespread cracks "caused by an unkown chemical attack".
Our investigation airs tonight on NewsChannel5 at 11, along with complete details on newsnet5.com.
