SANDUSKY, Ohio - An Ohio congressman has questioned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's decision to let a nuclear plant along Lake Erie reopen despite cracks found in its concrete shell.
The Sandusky Register reports that U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich sent a letter this week asking the NRC's inspector general to review the decision to reopen the Davis-Besse plant near Toledo. It reopened in December after a shutdown due to the cracks last fall.
The commission accepted plant owner FirstEnergy's findings that a lack of exterior weatherproofing coating caused the cracks and approved its plan for continuing safety that involves applying a new coating and performing tests.
