CLEVELAND - They brought flowers, they lit candles and they remembered Malissa Williams, a niece and cousin, who was killed in a hail of police gunfire following a high-speed chase two weeks ago.
“I just don’t understand stuff like this just keep repeating itself and nothing is being done about it. I don’t understand why they’re still out walking around while my cousin is laying in a casket,”
A team of detectives lead by the Ohio BCI is investigating the deadly shooting that started near the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. A coalition of more than 30 community and faith-based groups are now calling for a Department of Justice investigation and the appointment of a special prosecutor.
“That would relieve the politics and the incestuous relationship that is only normal and natural within the criminal justice system,” activist Khalid Samad said.
Williams’ uncle said he saw he just three or four days before she died. He said she hugged him.
“As far as her being a violent person, she was never like that. She wasn’t a violent person. She was a nice girl,” Walter Jackson said.
There will be another community forum Friday night regarding the police chase and shooting. It will be at Shaw High School in East Cleveland at 6 p.m.
