CLEVELAND - A traffic controller was struck by a car while directing traffic in downtown Cleveland Tuesday.

Cleveland police said the controller was taken to the hospital, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.

Many downtown traffic lights were knocked out of service during Hurricane Sandy, causing the city to put more traffic controllers into service at major intersections.

"They are working long shifts in the cold and rain to keep traffic flowing for all of us. Please use extra caution when approaching the intersections. Rain and low light conditions can make the controllers difficult to see, even when they are wearing reflective clothing," said the department in a news release.

As of Wednesday morning, traffic lights were knocked out at key intersections including Prospect and East 9th, as well as Prospect and East 30th.
