CLEVELAND - The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority is encouraging local commuters to Dump the Pump.
Thursday is the fifth annual National Dump the Pump Day. The American Public Transit Association organizes the occasion, in partnership with the National Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club.
Public transportation services nationwide hope commuters will make the switch from filling up their gas tanks, and instead catch a train or bus to work.
RTA riders with memberships can get certain discounts, including at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
In honor of Dump the Pump Day, some local employers are buying RTA fare passes to give to employees willing to try public transit for the day. Half the cost of those passes will go to the National Wildlife Federation, to help animals victimized by the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
