CLEVELAND - A new coffee shop opens in downtown Cleveland Monday morning. Nexus Café and Coffeehouse opens its doors at 6:30 a.m. at 627 Prospect Avenue.
Nexus will house a 140-seat venue space, which will feature local musicians, artists, business speakers and a variety of other community-enrichment functions. A large conference room will also be available for business meetings and other occasions.
Owner Mickey DeAngelo told NewsChannel5’s Paul Kiska in February, "I was born and raised here. I’ve lived other places, but I came back to Cleveland because there's a love for this city that's in us that you just can't explain.”
DeAngelo has a lot of confidence for Cleveland over the next few years.
"In the next five years, Cleveland is not going to look anything like it does now. This whole block is changing from here to University Circle -- its resurgence and for us it's a perfect time to come in," he said.
According to the company’s website, Nexus' impact will be global. Each cup of coffee sold will support and provide opportunities for farmers from the highlands of Kepahyang - an area known for producing superior single-origin coffee beans - through a sustainable partnership DeAngelo forged when he visited Sumatra in 2011.
Nexus will also support local businesses, including Berea-based Red Cedar Coffee Co., which will roast Nexus' coffee beans, and several Northeast Ohio farmers and artisans who will provide the ingredients for Nexus' menu.
Nexus Café and Coffeehouse will be open Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday 6:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 12 a.m. and closed on Sunday.
