CLEVELAND - The woman shot and killed by Cleveland police during a chase through the city last week suffered two dozen gunshot wounds.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said Malissa Williams suffered “multiple (24) gunshot wounds of head, neck, trunk, and left arm with multiple visceral, vascular, and skeletal injuries. HOMICIDE.”
Williams, 30, and Timothy Russell, 43, were the suspects shot at the end of the 22-minute chase late Thursday, police said.
The ME’s office has not yet released details about Russell’s death.
Police officials over the weekend announced that there were 137 shots fired by 13 officers at the end of the pursuit, which was near the water treatment plant in East Cleveland.
The pursuit started near police headquarters in downtown Cleveland after a second district officer reported there were shots fired from the car in which Russell and Williams were.
Cleveland police have since called in the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification to help with the investigation. The department wants to find answers as to why so many shots were fired and why the pursuit lasted so long.
On Monday, Cleveland police released recordings of radio traffic from the chase, which revealed the communication between dispatchers and police officers that night.
All 13 officers have been placed on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
