CLEVELAND - The Marine Week Cleveland mural was unveiled on Friday morning at the Cleveland Water Collection on East 55th Street and Carnegie Avenue.

Six talented Marine artists spent the past week painting the mural, which stretches 8 feet tall by 48 feet wide.

The work of art was designed by Staff Sgt. Randy L. Kirby, a production specialist with Headquarters and Service Battalion at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va.

"I couldn't have done this without the help of five other Marine artists. We spent 12 hours a day working in the hot sun to complete it on time," said Kirby. "I love the mural. It met and exceeded my expectations."

The mural features three sections, which include this year's Marine Week theme: Community, Country and Corps.

"We wanted to make sure we had a mural that represented our Corps' core values of honor, courage and commitment," said Brig. Gen. Joseph Osterman, Commanding General, MCRC.

More than 9,300 men and women from Ohio have served in the Marine Corps.

"Not all of those brave men and women have made it home. When you see this mural, I hope you remember those who unselfishly sacrificed for this nation," said Sgt. Maj. Micheal Barrett, 17th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson was on hand for the unveiling and thanked the artists for their hard work, as well as Sherwin-Williams for donating the paint.

"The Marines will leave a lot behind when they leave Cleveland after Marine Week. They're leaving a lasting impression on our youth and our entire community. This mural is a physical reminder of that," said Jackson.
