MAP: Cleveland sees rash of auto thefts over 6-day period

CLEVELAND - A rash of grand theft autos has taken over Cleveland streets. Over a six-day period, there have been dozens of vehicles reported stolen.

From Jan. 25-30, there have been 53 cars reported stolen. Cleveland police are urging people to get wheel locks for their cars so their vehicles don't become the next statistic.

Four were reported in a three-day period in the Fairfax neighborhood alone between Jan. 28-30. Older model vehicles were the targets, including a 1983 Ford truck.

A pair of stolen vehicles -- both Oldsmobile Cutlass 1990's model year -- were reported taken near Puritas Avenue, not far from St. Patrick's Cemetery.

In the North Broadway neighborhood, a 1990's Dodge Intrepid and a 1990's Dodge Caravan were reported missing by their owners.

Compared to cities of comparable size, including Wichita, Kan., Miami, Fla. and Tampa, Fla., Cleveland has a higher rate of grand theft auto.
