CLEVELAND - A man was charged with cruelty to animals after Cleveland police found a cockfighting ring in his attic, officers said.
Police were called to a house on West 30th Street near Monroe Avenue Saturday afternoon and discovered about 40 men cheering. Some of the men tried to flee where they heard police.
The cockfighting was going on in the attic, where police also noticed several caged roosters and a dead one in a trash can, according to Cleveland police.
On Wednesday, Jose Pena, 52, was charged with cruelty to animals and killing or injuring animals. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
Cleveland police said the dozens of roosters were taken to the city kennels, while eight others had to be euthanized.
