CLEVELAND - Federal authorities say a 55-year-old Cleveland man has been charged with engaging in illegal sexual activity with minors overseas.

Malek Al Maliki, Jr., 55, was arrested on March 6 and charged with the crimes.

“Protecting children from predators is a priority of my office and the Department of Justice,” said Steven Dettelbach, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. “We will vigorously go after those who would abuse children, whether they lurk online, travel abroad or engage in human trafficking in our backyard.”

The indictment against Al Maliki alleges he flew from Cleveland to Syria between Aug. 15, 2010 and Nov. 8, 2010, and had sex with a minor and tried to have sex with another.

A court date hasn't been set.
