CLEVELAND - Rick Kolesar put on his protective suit and carried his ladder as he approached a dangerous situation on Wednesday.
Kolesar was called out to Elyria West High School, where hornets built a huge nest on the goal post near a playground. This is one of the busiest seasons ever for Central Exterminating in Cleveland.
Heavy spring rain and a hot summer makes conditions perfect for breeding hornets, wasps and what are called stinging cicada killers, which are large hornet-like insects that preys on cicadas.
The baseball diamond at Rocky River Middle School has been closed for weeks because of wasps and hornets. A truck even blocks several nests in the ground on the ball diamond and signs warn of the danger zone near the pitchers mound.
That’s why you should check your own yard before mowing the lawn. Never plug a hive hole on the outside of your house because the bees will dig through drywall and enter the house.
Experts say call a trained exterminator to treat and remove the nests.
