CLEVELAND - A parent’s worst nightmare happened at a vacant house in the 5000 block on Magnet Avenue in Cleveland.

A 17-year-old girl abducted and rape, while trying to get to school Monday morning, so how can parents keep kids safe?

Child safety expert Ken Trump, a man who has written two books and appeared national speaking about the topic, said safety education begins at home with parents.

“I think that what happens is we’re afraid to talk to kids, as parents, out of fear that we’re going to alarm then,” Trump said.

There are a few rules parents need to teach every kid:

  • Kids need to travel in groups.
  • Kids should stay on main streets and pathways.
  • They should not walk up close to any approaching cars.
  • Children should never go with a stranger.
  • If they are grabbed, kids should kick, bite, hit, scream and do anything to get loose.
  • Call 911 from any phone for free, even pay phones or inactivated cell phones.

Trump said this is the one time parents need to train their kids to be non-compliant with an adult. Children need to use their sixth sense, a thing Trump said every kid has to know wrong from right.

“They should do a great job at no doing what the bad guy tells them to do,” Trump said.
