CLEVELAND - Every day, crews at Cleveland’s MetroHealth Medical Center deal with life and death situations. But on Wednesday, a lesson on life and death situations for emergency room medical residents was taught by the Cleveland Fire Department.

In all, 39 emergency medicine residents took part in "Doctor Day" at the Cleveland Fire Training Academy. The residents took part in many training exercises, including fighting a live fire, using the Jaws of Life on a vehicle, and suiting up in hazmat gear to participate in a mock spill.

The annual program gives residents a first-hand look at what first responders deal with when it comes to emergencies.

"Doctor Day, or 'Fire Academy' as we call it at the hospital, allows emergency medicine residents to experience how EMS and fire assess, treat, and comfort patients suffering from car accidents, burns, and chemical exposures”, said Dr. Thomas Collins, medical director for the Cleveland Department of Public Safety and for EMS and Emergency Preparedness, Department of Emergency Medicine and Metro Life Flight at MetroHealth Medical Center.

This exposure will allow the emergency physicians and select medical students rotating in our ER to better understand the situation the patient experienced and the pre-hospital care provided," explained Collins. "It will allow for better determination of injuries and stress on the patient."
