CLEVELAND - The grand opening of the new Horseshoe Casino Cleveland featured a ribbon-cutting like nothing this city has ever seen.
On Monday night, a 3D video was projected on the top eight floors of the 12-story Higbee Building in downtown Cleveland. The video will be replayed Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:45 p.m., 9 p.m., 9:30 p.m., 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
“It’s something that Dan (Gilbert) saw a while ago and he wanted to modify it and bring it to Cleveland,” said Chief Operating Officer of Rock Gaming Matt Cullen.
The projection mapping show, created by Virginia-based Quince Imaging, was set to music by Cleveland’s DJ Steph Floss, who can be heard most nights on 107.9. Quince Imaging used eight 20,000-lumen projectors to light up downtown and the company also helped bring the home of the Washington Wizards to life.
“It was nice to have a Cleveland local on staff to help with the highlights of C-town,” said Quince Imaging employee Sean Hovan. Hovan is a graduate of the University of Toledo has been working with the company for about a year. “I helped give input on some of the things outside of the sports that are the heart of the city.”
“Cleveland deserved more than a ribbon cutting,” Hovan said.
While part of the show featured key elements of the Horseshoe Casino brand, it was a celebration of Cleveland. From the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and the Cleveland Museum of Art to the Great Lakes Science Center, the city was on display. During the first night’s show, highlights of the Cavaliers, Browns and Indians had the crowd cheering while the music of Cleveland rapper Machine Gun Kelly filled Public Square.
“Like every Clevelander, I love our sports, but we are so much more than that,” Hovan said. He said he helped on the site survey of Public Square while he was in town for his wedding late last month at the Renaissance Hotel, but was on his honeymoon for most of the project. “I was bummed I couldn’t get back home.”
The final part of the video covers the casino in a red curtain that parts to reveal the Horseshoe logo.
