Disaster recovery company to complete work at Cleveland's West Side Market on Tuesday

CLEVELAND - The company hired to handle clean-up at Cleveland’s West Side Market will be done on Tuesday, but there is still more work before it can reopen.

The West Side Market on West 25th Street caught fire during the early morning on Jan. 30. No one was injured, but the blaze caused heavy smoke damage and destroyed two meat stands.

The city of Cleveland said city officials and Osborn Engineering performed a structural assessment of the main market building on Monday. RestoreX, a Mentor-based disaster recovery company firm, will complete its work on Tuesday after more than a week inside the 100-year-old market.

The Cleveland Department of Public Works will soon meet with the market’s tenants association to explain the next steps for vendors.

Before the West Side Market can open and stands can be restocked, all surfaces that come into contact with food have to be cleaned and sanitized, the city of Cleveland said. The storage lockers in the market’s basement must also be cleaned.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health will oversee the final inspection. The market house will remain closed until further notice, the city said.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
