CLEVELAND - Police said a second 19-year-old has been arrested after she attempted to run over a group of women that resulted in the death of her vehicle's passenger, 19-year-old Racine Redmon.
The teenager was arrested on felonious assault charges.
Sgt. Sammy Morris of the Cleveland Police Department said the suspect was driving a car in the area of East 66th Street and Woodland Avenue early Friday morning with the victim in the back seat.
Police said when the two encountered a group of women standing on the sidewalk, the suspect then tried to run over that group with her vehicle several times. Officers said a previous confrontation involved was involved.
Detectives said the suspect then turned the car around and shots were fired. According to Cleveland police, one bullet struck Redmon.
Morris said at about 2:15 a.m. the suspect dropped off Redmon at St. Vincent Medical Center and left the scene. Redmon died from her injuries at the hospital.
Hospital officials identified the vehicle for police, who earlier told NewsChannel5, they located a vehicle matching the same description with a female driver inside.
Those who live near the vicinity of East 66th Street and Woodland Avenue said they heard the shots fired early Friday morning.
"Bullets don't got no eyes, so I didn't want to be a victim myself," said Jason Parker. Not knowing the victim, Parker shook his head and said, "She's not even 21 yet - just turned 18, probably out her mom's house. She had a long way to go, but it ended too soon."
The case has been turned over to the prosecutor’s office and is still under investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident should call the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit at 216-623-5464.
