CLEVELAND - The West Side Market will be closed "until further notice" so officials can investigate the cause the fire and have the property properly cleaned.

Cleveland assistant fire chief Brent Collins said the blaze does not appear to be suspicious in nature. He believes it was accidental.

Two stands inside the market suffered the most damage. Sebastian's Meats has the most damage, according to officials, and Foster's Meats.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Collins assured reporters at a Wednesday afternoon news conference that there was "no major" permanent damage to the historic building.

Public works director Mike Cox was just happy no one was hurt in the blaze and that damage wasn't more severe. He did note that some water damage was reported in basement where food was in coolers, but the extent of total loss, and loss of food products, isn't known.

The department of health is assessing the food quality, noting toxic fumes could have contaminated some or all of the goods. Director Karen Butler said her team is looking into any potential issues and said quality assurance is top of mind.

"We're working diligently to get this open and get our facility back online," explained Cox. "We have a lot of soot and smoke damage that needs remediated."

The fire broke out at West Side Market around 2:20 a.m. in the 1900 block of West 25th St.

An exact time frame for when the market would reopen could not be given. Officials said it's because they don't know how long each investigation will take or how long it will take to clean up the fire damage.
