Berea man receives charges, bond set at $500,000 after hit-skip crash involving off-duty officer

CLEVELAND - A Berea man arrested in connection with a hit-skip crash that left an off-duty police officer from Michigan seriously injured received charges and bond in court Wednesday morning.

Gary Fury was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated vehicular assault by Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey S. Carr. Fury's bond was set at $500,000.

Police said Robert Charles Bielak was struck on I-71 south near the Ridge Road overpass after he pulled his motorcycle over to the side of the road to check a map. Police said the driver of the car, Fury, continued on without stopping after striking him.

Bielak is currently in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center, according to the hospital.Doctors had to amputate his left leg from the knee down, his family said.

Bialek is a police officer in Pinckney, Michigan.

Witnesses told police they believed the car was a 1992-99 Buick LeSabre with heavy damage to the front right fender, bumper and molding.
