Handful of produce stands open but fire at West Side Market could keep most stands closed for weeks

CLEVELAND - The fire that shut down Cleveland's historic West Side Market this week could keep many vendors away for weeks.

Friday, a handful of stands on the produce side opened for business, after being given the OK by the city. However, there appeared to be very little foot traffic, as most of the century old market remains closed indefinitely.

Greg Shuck, of Greg's Produce, told NewsChannel5 that he decided to open his stand on Friday because he wanted to be there for his customers who have been loyal to him over the years.

The fire was believed to be caused by an electrical problem. Only two stands actually caught fire but soot spread, and caused smoke damage to the walls and ceiling. Crews will not only have to clean the entire interior of the market, but any food that was exposed to the smoke will have to be destroyed.
