CLEVELAND - The nation paused to remember the man who dreamed of a better nation on Monday. All across the country and our area people paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

He would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on Sunday.

Inside a small church on the Cleveland's eastside, the work of the civil rights leader continued. Members of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church cooked a meal to feed to the community.

"A lot of children are in the community, a lot of schools in the community and because of the economy, school meals may be the only meal the kids get. So by school being out today, it is a great day to help the community and feed the children," said Pastor Chelton Flanagan.

Steve Chesney knows all about the economy. Jobs have been hard to come by for the self-employed contractor who has 10 children to feed.

"We do stuff like this all the time because it helps save food at the house," said Chesney.

Dozens of volunteers fanned out across Cleveland for a day of service in the community. City Year, a nationwide program, partnered with Cleveland and other groups to help with several projects including sprucing up the Lonnie Burton Recreation Center.

"It shows we care about the community, don't take the day off instead come and help out," said East Tech High School sophomore Elijah Simms.
