CLEVELAND - The "House Crashers" are in town. Members of the hit cable show, which appears on DIY Network,is owned by Scripps Networks, are in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood to remodel a former butcher shop storefront that is now is part of a West 5th Street home.
For those unfamiliar with the reality TV show, host Josh Temple ventures into home improvement stores and strikes up conversations with shoppers, trying to find out what they're working on. If the project and the people and are interesting, there's a chance that the "House Crashers" will choose the project.
Rachel Dissell and her husband, Tim Harrison, used a slightly different route to get the host's attention. They knew that Temple would be at the Brooklyn Lowe's store, looking for potential projects. They had already remodeled most of their house, but remodeling the former storefront would be a challenge.
"This room was just too big. It was going to take us another 10 years to have enough money and time to get it done," Dissell said. Off to Lowe's they went. Armed with photos of the former storefront, they presented their project to Temple.
"What cinched it for me was that they wanted to restore it to have sort of a butcher shop-vibe to it, keep that storefront," Temple said.
The storefront project is estimated to be in the top three in size the "Home Crashers" have tackled and it truly takes a team effort since the entire project is completed in three days. Temple insists that the homeowners and their friends help with the project. He also enlists the help of local contractors.
According to Pat Hurst, whittling a five month project down to three days offers many challenges.
"To condense that amount of time within three days it's challenging and there's a lot of things being done, electricians over here, plumbers over there, carpenters there. So it's a lot of coordination, and that's pretty much all I've been doing," said Hurst.
Viewers will have to wait until early 2012 to see the finished product.
