BRECKSVILLE, Ohio - A new veterans memorial in downtown Brecksville was vandalized overnight.
The memorial, located in the Brecksville Park, was just unveiled on Saturday in the city’s public square, as an honor for local servicemen and women.
“We had a large eagle, a Civil War eagle that was carved of stone. We had a service that was very nice then last night, someone came and they vandalized it,” Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby said.
“It really bothers me that someone would disgrace it. It's an a front to any service person, but more than that it's an a front to the people of Brecksville that spent their money to put it there,” World War II veteran Homer Farr said.
Police have arrested and charged five, 18-year-old suspects for the incident. Four of them are from Brecksville and the other is from Broadview Heights.
Authorities were able to recover the eagle part of the monument, but it was damaged.
