AKRON, Ohio - In an effort to improve neighborhoods, Akron City Council is now considering legislation that requires property owners to provide written notice of pending building and/or housing code violations prior to the transfer or sale of the Akron property.
The bill came about after a property owner accused a property seller of selling him property on Manchester Road that had numerous pending housing code violations and failing to tell him about it.
"This case is a perfect example of why we need these tougher regulations," said Mayor Don Plusquellic in a news release. "The property had a 91/2 year housing history with the city. The paperwork on this property is extensive and is easily discoverable to anyone who inquires."
Plusquellic said he "firmly believes" it's the owner's duty and obligation to notify a potential buyer of any active housing or building code violations prior to the transfer of property.
