AKRON, Ohio - An Ohio jury has convicted a 17-year-old boy in the rape and slaying of his 3-year-old half-sister.
The Summit County jury deliberated more than two hours before finding the teen guilty Thursday. The Akron Beacon Journal reports that it was the first time a jury trial has been conducted in the county's juvenile court.
The boy was 15 when the crimes occurred in 2011. He turned 17 last month. The judge held off sentencing him, instead ordering a sex-offender assessment and any course of treatment deemed necessary.
Since he was tried as a juvenile, he can be held in a juvenile facility until he turns 21.
An autopsy said the 3-year-old girl died from "multisystem organ failure," a medical term for serious infection from traumatic injuries.
