AKRON, Ohio - Retired, paralyzed Akron officer laid to rest
A solemn sign of respect for a fellow officer. Akron police, family and friends gathered to honor Frank Mancini, who died earlier this week, saying he will be remembered as a hero.
It was April 10, 1965 when Mancini, officer Eugene Hooper and reserve officer Harold Wintrow pulled over a couple of robbery suspects. A scuffle followed and one suspect, Charles Jennings grabbed Mancini's gun and shot all three officers.
Officer Hooper died at the scene. Wintrow and Mancini, who was 25 at the time, were left paralyzed.
As the funeral procession passed through downtown Akron on Friday morning, a stop was made in front of Akron's police department where officers, civilians and cadets lined the street.
Mancini's funeral was held at Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home in Cuyahoga Falls. He was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron.
Mancini passed away on Monday from pneumonia complications.
