Newly released police radio traffic sheds light on pit bull attack in Akron last week

AKRON, Ohio - Just released police radio traffic sheds new light on a pit bull attack in Akron last week on Stanton and Dietz avenues.

A 6-year-old boy, along with the owner's girlfriend and 14-year-old son, were bitten by the dog after it got loose from the home of Andre Brown on Sept. 19.

The dog warden never came out that evening, though the request was made multiple times by authorities. After NewsChannel5 began asking questions, Akron city officials said a policy change was on the way.

Just released dispatch radio traffic shows how frustrated police were the night of the dog attack.

Akron police officers urged a dispatcher numerous times to send a dog warden to the scene. The officer can be heard saying if they don't get the dog warden or a dog pole restraint, then they need a shotgun.

After the dog owner Andre Brown arrived home, he took the "crazy" dog back to his house, where it remains.

In the radio traffic, the dispatcher said, "the warden will not respond. He said the dog gets quarantined to the property with the owner and that animals can't be arrested."

Andre Brown pleaded not guilty in Akron Municipal Court in connection to his dog's attack. Brown wasn't happy to see the media shoving a member of the news media into a wall. A pre-trial date has been set for October 12.

The 6-year-old who was attacked by the dog was released from the hospital with multiple bite wounds on Friday.

City officials plan to meet with Akron Police Friday afternoon to detail the new policy when it comes to the animal control officer responding to dog attacks.

A city official said the dog warden would need a signed search warrant from a judge to remove the dog and wondered why police didn't request such a search warrant that night.
