AKRON, Ohio - Former Firestone High School wwimmer and Olympic gold medal winner Mark Gangloff will help kick off a free swimming program for at-risk kids.
The program is a result of a partnership between the Akron Area YMCA and the USA Swimming Foundation's 'Make a Splash' program.
On Sunday, May 8, Gangloff will be joined by area high school competitive swimmers to teach a group of youth water safety skills at the University Park YMCA in Akron.
According to the USA Swimming Foundation website , the youth drowning rate in ethnically-diverse communities is 2 to 3 times higher than the national average. The key factor is not race, but children of non-swimming parents are more likely to be at risk of drowning.
