AKRON, Ohio - The company that makes Wonder Bread has announced plans to close its Akron bakery by the end of June.
The move will lay off approximately 100 people.
Hostess Brands says production will be moved to its Northwood, Ohio location.
The company says the closing is due in part the economic downturn and tumbling bread sales. The age and condition of the Akron plant also contributed to the decision.
The South Forge Street location has been baking bread near the University of Akron since 1923.
