AKRON, Ohio - Police in Akron are searching for the person or people who nearly got away with an ATM from a Family Dollar store.

Officers were first alerted to the incident when the alarm went off at the store on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw a cargo van parked in front of the business – and a heavy-duty chain attached to the rear bumper led into the store and around an ATM just inside the front door.

The thief or thieves fled the area before police arrived.

Officers said they believe the van parked there was stolen, as the steering column was peeled – but it had not yet been reported as being stolen.

Police are asking anyone with information about the break-in to contact the department.
