AKRON, Ohio - The morning after the University of Akron basketball team suffered a historically bad loss, the star point guard they were without again appeared in court.
Alex Abreu pleaded not guilty in Summit County Common Pleas Court during his arraignment. His $5,000 bond was continued.
The 21-year-old who was a key contributor for the Zips was arrested after police busted him for allegedly accepting a package containing five ounces of marijuana.
Abreu, along with 18-year-old Austin Durgala, were charged with trafficking in and possession of marijuana.
Akron suspended the junior pending the result of the police investigation.
After winning the MAC Championship and earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament despite Abreu's absence, the Zips were unceremoniously bounced by VCU in a 88-42 loss.
