AKRON, Ohio - A local school district is getting ready to launch a new school. It just needs teachers.

Akron Public Schools is starting a major hiring push for the new Buchtel/Perkins Community Learning Center. The school district kicked off an internal hiring wave, interviewing for about 125 positions, mostly teachers.

Buchtel/Perkins CLC is currently under construction, behind the existing Buchtel building, and is set to open in the fall.

The new school will house Akron’s first New Tech High School, a STEM school, focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math.

Buchtel/Perkins CLC will teach grades 7 through 12. When it opens, students in grades 9 through 10 will be the first ones exposed to the STEM courses. The curriculum will expand to the other grades over the next three years.

Akron schools plans to hire internally first, then make outside hires if necessary. All interested teachers at Buchtel and Perkins Middle School must reapply and interview to remain at Buchtel/Perkins CLC.

An update on the project will be given to the school board Monday evening.
