AKRON, Ohio - Akron police said it appears a husband was trying to end his wife's suffering when he walked into the ICU and shot his wife, leaving her brain dead.

Authorities said Barbara Wise, 65, was shot by her husband, John Wise, 66, at Akron General Medical Center around 9 p.m. Saturday.

On Sunday morning, Barbara was declared brain dead.

John has been charged with attempted aggravated murder, but those charges could be increased when his wife is taken off life support.

According to police, Wise was armed with a gun when he went to his wife's room and pulled the trigger. There was a doctor in the room at the time of the incident, but the doctor wasn't injured.

The Wises had been married for 45 years.

John is behind bars at the Summit County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court early next week.

Barbara had been admitted to AGMC last week with a non-disclosed, life-threatening condition.
