AKRON, Ohio - A northeast Ohio hospital says it fired employees for improperly accessing computerized records related to a patient who was fatally shot in a possible mercy killing.
A spokesman for Akron General Medical Center tells the Akron Beacon Journal "a small number" of workers were fired for accessing the records even though they weren't involved in caring for the patient. He wouldn't specify how many people were fired or their positions.
He says the facility is committed to protecting patients' privacy, and an investigation is ongoing.
An attorney for suspected shooter John Wise says he hasn't been told about any problems with the records for Wise's wife, Barbara.
Authorities say Wise shot his wife of 45 years in an intensive care unit. He has pleaded not guilty to several charges.
