CLEVELAND - Clevelanders who are still reeling from LeBron James' decision to leave the Cavaliers have a strange ally. Muhammed Rahim, a Guantanamo detainee whom the government calls a close associate of Osama bin Laden, told his Akron attorney just what he thinks about it.
"LeBron James is a very bad man," Rahim wrote in a June 19 letter to Attorney Carlos Warner. "He shuld apologise to the city of Cleveland."
Warner, who didn't receive the letter until this week, told NewsChannel5 that he doesn't think LeBron's a bad man but that people would appreciate an earnest apology.
As for the apology from LeBron in May of 2011, when he said he was "sorry for the way it happened," Warner said it wasn't enough.
"LeBron, as a resident of this region," Warner said, "we ask you to come and have that apology. We will host it and after we host it you will be a hero."
Rahim is an Afghan.
"In a tribal culture, tribal law, loyalty is important," Warner said. "It's about protecting your home, protecting your neighbor's home above all else. So those things are of value in the Afghan culture."
Warner wouldn't say much more about his client, citing the sensitive nature of the case.
"Unfortunately, because it's a top secret case," he said, " a high value case, I can't tell you anything about him or our conversations."
Warner did say, however, that his client is being detained indefinitely and that the men at Guantanamo "desire to participate in the Military Commissions in order to bring finality to their indefinite detention."
"As a country we believe in due process," he said. "Everybody should have their day in court."
